Cambridge is the administrative centre of and university town in Cambridgeshire, England and is located 37 miles southeast of Peterborough, 31 miles east of Bedford and 60 miles northeast of London.  The postcodes for the town of Cambridge are: CB1, CB2, CB3, CB4 and CB5; the town has a population of circa 122,800.

The oldest settlements in the area were a Belgic tribe that lived on Castle Hill in the 1st century and even before that there was a farmstead build around 1500 BC at the site of Fitzwilliam College.  Due to Castle Hill’s favourable strategic location, the Romans used it as a military outpost and crossing point of the river Cam. This settlement was called Duroliponte, consisting of the Latin word ponte for bridge and the Celtic word duroli for water, and remained a regional centre until around 400 AD.  Under the Saxon and the Viking rule, Cambridge experienced erratic growth phases fuelled by good trade relations in the region and the Normans, who arrived in 1068, built a castle on Castle Hill.  The establishment of the town as it is known today started with the University of Oxford going into voluntary suspension after two scholars were hanged for manslaughter.  The then exiled Oxford scholars migrated to among others the school at Cambridge and founded the University of Cambridge in 1209. The university and thus the town grew in the coming centuries, with King’s College Chapel built from 1446 to 1515 and Cambridge University Press opening in 1534.  In 1992, Cambridge gained its second University, which is now known as Anglia Ruskin University.

Cambridge is located 28 miles north of Stansted Airport with an hourly bus link to the town. One of the most popular recreational activities in Cambridge is punting on the river Cam which goes through the heart of the old town centre and passes close to many attractive college buildings.  Cambridge is home to several theatres including the ones hosted by the two Universities and the Cambridge Corn Exchange which regularly hosts theatrical performances.  The town hosts the annual Cambridge Film Festival, Cambridge Beer Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival and Midsummer Fair.
