Kettering is a market town in Northamptonshire, England. It is located 8 miles north of Wellingborough, 15 miles northeast of Northampton and 26 miles southeast of Leicester. The postcode is NN15-NN16 and the town has a population of approximately 82,000.

The name Kettering used to baffle place-name scholars in the 1930s, while today it is generally recognised that the name originated from the Anglo-Saxon or Old English where the ending ‘ing’ means ‘tribe’ or ‘the people of’. Settlement in the area dates back to the 1^st century when it was the most northerly possession of the Catuvellauni, a Belgic tribe that was conquered by the Romans in 43 AD. IN the 5^th century the area became one of the earliest Anglo-Saxon penetrations into the interior of England. The area was part of the Kingdom of Mercia and converted to Christianity in 654 AD. Kettering was conquered by the Danes in 889, by the Vikings of York in 940 and was retaken by the English in 942. By 1086 the Abbey of Peterborough held Kettering manor. The development of boot and shoe industry in the 19^th century led to the expansion of the town and it became the centre of religious non-conformism in the Victorian era. During World War II there was a large influx of American servicemen who worked at the nearby airfield RAF Grafton Underwood, soon nicknamed Grafton Undermud as a reference to the English weather.
