Commercial Office Space in Lambeth & Offices to Let in Borough of Lambeth, London
Lambeth is an area to the northern end of the London Borough of Lambeth and a part of the SE1 postal district. Confusingly it is now more commonly described as Waterloo after the railway station whose viaduct separates the former centre of the Lambeth village from the River Thames. The name Lambeth is thought to be old English with "lamb" and "hythe", suggesting a landing place for lambs or sheep. Until the mid-18th Century the north of Lambeth was marshland, crossed by a number of roads raised against floods. Lambeth was known for glass making, pottery and boat building and the industry was concentrated in the north along the riverside of the Thames.
The mid 18th century saw the opening of Westminster Bridge followed by Blackfriars Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge and the consequent development of major roads through Lambeth such as Kennington and Camberwell New Road and of course Westminster Bridge Road. This development provided a new found freedom for Londoners to escape the City to live and was followed by ribbon development of houses and shops on these new roads and some terraces still remain. The mid 19th century and the coming of the railways and railway stations encouraged expansion into the south of the Borough of Lambeth and the area become sought after by the lower middle classes who worked both in the West End and the City. After World War II, a programme of slum clearance and development of public housing was implemented often against fierce opposition as the large 19th century properties were demolished.
Lambeth is the site of St Thomas’s Hospital home to the Florence Nightingale Museum, the London Eye, the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal National Theatre, County Hall and Waterloo mainline station. Away from the River Thames is the internationally famous Imperial War Museum. In the south western corner around Lambeth Bridge is Lambeth Palace, the official residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Palace used to be located opposite the Palace of Westminster and the two were linked by a horse ferry across the River Thames.
The nearest London Underground stations to this northern end of the London Borough of Lambeth are Waterloo with its mainline station, Southwark and Lambeth North. The area is also served by a network of local and cross London buses.
Lambeth has a mixed retail offer with both independent units and high street names and there are many restaurants, cafes and bars to support a large office population as well as local residents. There is also easy access to the shops and restaurants of Westminster and Southwark.
Although Lambeth SE1 is home to many government offices, it is in addition able to offer commercial properties of varying age and size both in new build developments and some refurbished historic buildings and for all types of working environments. This interesting range of office space is available to rent on both conventional leasehold terms as well as serviced offices to let in Lambeth on very flexible terms. The different types of offices for rent are offered alongside the benefit of access to meeting rooms as well as virtual offices in this fast developing Southeast part of London.
